Aquasky – Raise The Devil

On November 4, 2011, in mixes, music news, old school, by D-Monic

Legendary Bournemouth-based trio Aquasky return with their 8th studio album ‘Raise The Devil’ featuring 16 bass-heavy party tracks which include guest vocals and collaborations from Lee Mortimer, Engine Earz Experiment, Daddy Freddy, Ragga Twins, Tenor Fly, Mr. Thing, PYRAMID, Acafool, Deja, Roisin Brophy, Didjelirium and Bex Riley. This album sees the trio take it back to basics and return to what people expect when they hear the name Aquasky!

Having been solid friends since the heady days of rave and acid house, the guys first hit the studio together during the jungle era and in 1995 Aquasky was born, signing immediately to Moving Shadow before going onto release on some of the biggest and best labels including Polydor, Botchit & Scarper, Reinforced, Good Looking Records, Hospital, Southern Fried and Mr. Bongo. In 2001 they took the decision to launch their own imprint Passenger as a place where they had free reign to unleash their full creativity and develop both their sound and the sounds of other acts.

Raise The Devil’ sees the guys return to what they know best… delivering bonafide dancefloor bangers. There are elements of Breakbeat, Rave, D&B, Dubstep, Nu-Jungle, Warehouse, Drumstep and Reggae. The focus and album title refers to getting people to find their inner devil trapped within themselves and releasing it. Harnessing that sourced energy productively and creatively whether that is in the club, the studio, at home or on the streets, demanding for change! This isn’t a political record, it isn’t even a record with a purpose driven end goal but it is an album that deals with the positive and unleashes heaps of good vibes to the listener.

This is an album for those who loved Aquasky’s previous albums ‘Beat The System’ & ‘Stayfresh’.

Hubbz-a Hubbz-a

On May 24, 2010, in downloads, mixes, by D-Monic

OK… so I met Hubbz many years ago.  I remember him most as one of the engineers for my 1Groove.com radio show.  Those late nights were fun times.  :)

So, he moved to Vancouver one day, and it was only after that that I really noticed his DJ ability (sadly).

I got a CD from him once and it blew my mind.  I put it in the car and didn’t take it out for MONTHS.  The only reason I took it out was because Skool Of Thought demanded that I give it to him to take back to the UK with him.

So, I saw he’s got a new blend done that’s pretty fun!

Dynamite MC vs Damian Marley – Hubbz In The Attic Blend

Download that and enjoy. Also, you should check this mix too. This has been ‘pon di ‘pod for ages. Still listen to it often. Git It!

SOUTH RAKKAS CREW – THE STIMULUS PACKAGE

SOUTH RAKKAS CREW – THE STIMULUS PACKAGE

It’s finally here, the big New Years present from Alex G and Dow Jones! Featuring vocals from Capleton, Killa Queenz, Deerhoof (!?) and a host of other new & unknown rippers – YES! Grab it all for free below!!!

WHO ARE THE SOUTH RAKKAS CREW?

South Rakkas Crew (SRC) was founded by producer Dennis ‘Dow Jones’ Shaw in late 2002. After managing Riprock n Alex G Entertainment, Orlando’s premier ‘Pop’ production house, Dow Jones teamed up with Alex G creating what is proving to be one of the hottest Dancehall and Electro music production teams today.

South Rakkas CrewSRC gave the world Riddims like: Clappas, Red Alert, Bionic Ras, Chinkuzi, etc. They have produced Dancehall music’s biggest artists including Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Lady Saw, Mr. Vegas, Ce’Cile, Mr. Easy, Sizzla, T.O.K., and the list goes on. They have become known as Dancehall’s most innovative producers, bringing a fresh new sound which the top European DJ’s have titled Electro-Dancehall. Dow Jones has another alias, “King of the cut,” given to him by some of Jamaica’s biggest producers, for South Rakka’s ability to ‘chop up’, and rearrange songs creating new and exciting mixes.

Although the team is based in Orlando Florida, they hail from Southern Canada. Growing up in Toronto, and Mississauga Ontario has given them an edge, explains Dow Jones. “I was born in Jamaica but grew up in Canada. Alex G and I grew up in a very multicultural environment. We have been exposed to many genres of music. At different times in our lives were were into Top 40, Reggae, Pop, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Dancehall, Bass, Freestyle, Dance, R&B, Jungle, New Wave, Rave, Rock, Salsa, Merengue, Electro., etc. This is what gives us our sound.” This ‘sound’ has earned South Rakkas Crew high accolades in the remix world as well, and from a very eclectic list of artists, including: Bob Marley, Duran Duran, DJ Shadow, Lily Allen, Beck, T.O.K, Mr. Vegas, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Bounty Killer, T-Pain, R. Kelly, Twista, Good Charlotte, Shakira, Alicia Keys, and Chris Brown.

The team worked together in Canada, but struggled with the compromises they had to make due to the industries lack of interest in domestic urban music. Alex G moved to Florida to do some production work for Base music rappers 95 South and a then unknown Pop group called NSYNC. Dow Jones quickly followed and although he had always dabbled in Dancehall, was producing Latin Rap and House before his relocation.
