A-Trizzy Gettin’ Bizzy!

On November 17, 2011, in downloads, mixes, by D-Monic

When he’s not busy making instant hits as one half of Ducksauce, he’s running Fool’s Gold with partner Nick Catchdubs and making mixes like this!

Who Is A-Trak?

“In the decade since he won the 1997 DMC World DJ Championship at a prodigious 15 years of age, A-Trak has turned the art of turntablism back toward its original party-rocking focus – the dude can scratch and beat-juggle, but he’s just as skilled at maintaining momentum and crafting seamless segues.”Pitchfork

Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West’s larger-than-life stadium shows with ease. In today’s DJ culture, A-Trak holds a truly unique place. He and partner Nick Catchdubs founded America’s most trendsetting new label, Fool’s Gold, launching the careers of artists such as Kid Sister and Kid Cudi. Fool’s Gold’s mission to merge all aspects of club music was already outlined in Trizzy’s original mixtape manifesto, Dirty South Dance, which set the tone for his own production. He is now one of the most sought-after remixers in electronic music, and his remixes for the likes of the

Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Boys Noize have become undeniable mainstays in DJ sets the world over. 2009 saw the release of two critically acclaimed DJ mixes, Infinity +1 and Fabriclive 45, as well as the birth of Duck Sauce, his collaboration with Armand Van Helden. The duo’s radio smash “aNYway” cemented itself as the dance anthem of the year, A-Trak’s first true chart-topper with two videos in international rotation and across-the-board support from Pete Tong to Busy P, David Guetta to 2manydjs. Duck Sauce’s 2010 follow up “Barbra Streisand” was even bigger, a whistling pop sensation that accumulated over 50 million YouTube views of its star-studded video while hitting platinum heights around the globe. They even covered it on X-Factor and Glee!

Not bad for a kid whom many viewed as a 90’s turntablism prodigy. After taking home every DJ title known to man before he could shave, A-Trak toured the world, first alongside Q-Bert’s Invisibl Skratch Piklz and then with Craze and the Allies. In 2004, he was hand-picked by Kanye to be his tour DJ. A near decade of youthful meanderings was captured on his acclaimed DVD Sunglasses Is A Must.

Somewhere along the line, A-Trak also became a new-school sartorial icon, collaborating with Nike, New Era, Kidrobot, Zoo York and pretty much every designer worth his salt. And all the while, his brother morphed into the lead singing lothario in the acclaimed electro-pop sensation Chromeo. The last couple of years have seen Trizzy headlining tours and festival stages the world over. Add to that scratching on Common’s classic Be, Kanye’s Late Registration and Graduation, Kid Cudi’s Man On The Moon and Drake’s Thank Me Later, as well as producing Kid Sister’s debut album Ultraviolet, collaborations with the likes of Lupe Fiasco and Laidback Luke, and original releases with Stones Throw and Kitsune.

After years of schlepping vinyl, accumulating air miles and dressing smart, A-Trak has finally become the man to call to make the kids dance. Ask him and he’ll tell you that this is the moment he’s been waiting for his whole career.

They’ve released a recent live set recorded at another Toronto institution: The Comfort Zone.

Enjoy.

The Countdown Is On

On April 19, 2010, in misc, by D-Monic

Dub PistolsHow long do you think it’ll take for breaks to come around again? Any guesses? I’ve watched the genre that I devoted so much of my adult life to dwindle away over the past couple years, but I’ve just seen the final nail go in the coffin.

The UK Festival season is coming soon, and all the big ones are announcing they’re monsterous mega-line ups. Ususally these festivals have huge dance stages where you’ll see a mix of everyone, and you’d ALWAYS see the big boys playing… but not this year.

Perusing the Glastonbury line up, the only breaks act on this whole line up is the Stanton Warriors.

Creamfields is more dance oriented, and the only breaks act on that line up is… no one. Not one breaks act. No Plumps. No Krafty. No Freestylers. No Deekline. Nothing. The Annie Mac stages says more TBA, but judging by what she’s into these days, a breaks act will most likely not be announced.

Then there’s BestivalBreaks? Um… Dub Pistols? Arthur Baker… that’s it… but do they even count?

It’s been very hard to watch so many great breaks artists jump ship over the past little while. Only a handful stayed true to their roots. The rest seemed to have jumped from being big fish in a medium sized pond to being regular fish in an ocean of house… being overshadowed and eaten by the whales that have been there from the beginning.

It’s a sad state of affairs…

Party Like We Never Did!

On April 13, 2010, in mixes, video, by D-Monic

Brazillian producers Felguk (not to be confused with the special sauce from Canadian burger chain Licks) are putting out a ravetastic jam on Deekline and Tim Healey’s Giant Pussy Records. Here’s their press stuff:

It’s a phenomenon in the making. 2nite has already destroyed crowds across Europe, the USA, as a feature tune in Felguk’s live performances and in bothTim Healey & Deekline’s DJ sets.

This hi-octane bass-led outing takes no prisoners. A rave synth slaps you in the face before you get sucker-punched by the bold combination of Sporty-O’svocals and that patented super-tight Felguk bass and groove.

Then – just when you thought things couldn’t get “more party”, the rave synth re-appears, and speeds up to a frankly ridiculous bpm before Sporty-O and the bass slam back in together, delivering a unparalleled bomb of a club-moment.

Play this tune anytime, anywhere, then step back and watch the crowd go wild.

“Tonight is gonna be the night…  party like we never did”

Continuing with the trend of todays internet promo techniques, here’s a promo video. We’re talking bets to see how long this stays on Youtube… I say it’ll be down by the end of the day. See if you can guess why.

TRACKLIST:

  1. Felguk – Buzz Me – Rework – BugEyed Recs
  2. Neelix – Disco Decay – Felguk Remix – BugEyed Recs
  3. Felguk feat Sporty-O – 2Nite – Original Mix – Giant Pussy Recs

New Stuff from Odissi

On April 13, 2010, in mixes, music news, by D-Monic

Odissi

Artist, DJ, and Suicide Girl Odissi has a new release out on Lot49 and a new mix to download.

Here’s the deal with the release:

Dance music’s reining princess of all things twisted returns to Lot49 with a follow up to her first solo release on the label, (Empty Vodka Bottles), which was unleashed on the dance scene last September.

‘Dirty Secrets’ is a naughty techno perversion of an original rock track taken from her Sex & Circuitry project album which was produced alongside guitarist Jim Davies, better known for his axe wielding in bands such as The Prodigy and Pitch Shifter.

Re-creating the original underground electro-rock anthem into something entirely different, and far more fucked up, Odissi takes back her lyrics and flawlessly transforms the initial idea into a brooding, industrial electro monster.

True to her signature sound, she once again injects her music with her sleazy and sultry spoken word vocals, this time in a poetic description of Soho’s vibrant red light district, transvestites, gay bars and seedy brothels.

On the Remix duties, Lot49 has appropriately called in one of the hottest names from Italy’s bubbling underground techno scene, Dyno. Equally known for his love of dark techy grooves, Dyno strips back the vocal and dubs it out, twisting the original into something that wouldn’t sound amiss as the soundtrack to an S&M Orgy. Sleazy and gritty synths roll along tight and driving drums and disorienting guitar stabs. Late night dancefloor headfuckery guaranteed.

For those like the tempo pushed a little harder there’ s also a remix by Hedflux who as of late has been creating quite a buzz with his fresh and distinctive flavor or cerebral tech-funk. In his remix of “Dirty Secrets” he stays true to his sound, drawing on energy from breaks, techno and psychedelic styles, resulting in a fusion of deep driving bass grooves, thumping drops and intricate neon synth-play.

Here’s The Mix:

TRACKLIST:

  1. Simon2 & Andreas Henneberg – Bolingo Gringo – Kittball
  2. Steve Mac – Noise Bastard (Santos Bastard Jack Remix) – Saved
  3. Odissi – Empty Vodka Bottles (Jon Gurd Remix) – LOT49
  4. Barem – Heyday (Ronan Portela Remix) – Foundsound Records
  5. Down Right Rude – Sofia – Lot49
  6. Santos – Metal Boogaloo – Saved Records
  7. Joan Reyes – Shakedown (Bass Kleph Remix) – Fresco Records
  8. Tristan Garner & Gregori Klosman – Fucking Down Dub – Joia Records
