Well… didn’t ‘write’ it, but had the foresight to bring a photographer with him on a few years worth of tours to document his travels around the globe.

From Diplo:

Dear Everyone,

Over the last couple of years I have been traveling all over the world to play and make music. Along the way I brought my friend Shane McCauley to photograph it and these images have become the book 128 Beats Per Minute. We visited so many places and met so many people that have inspired, influenced, and informed myself and others. This book is a culmination of just some of the experiences I’ve had so far and I’m lucky to have had Shane there to photograph them for you. There are a lot of DJ’s in this book and I hope you investigate and learn more about all of them, the music they make, and the cities they’re from. Without you and them none of this is possible and I am grateful that I can share this with you.

Sincerely,

If your ears work, you can’t not have fun at a Smalltown DJs gig. That’s a scientific fact. Look it up. The Canadian duo’s uncanny ability to make crowds feel like schoolkids at recess stems naturally from their focus on maximizing fun for themselves.

‘We’re just out to consistently have the best time possible,’ says Pete Emes, who shares space behind the decks with partner Mike Grimes. This fun maximization philosophy is the unifying force be-hind the Smalltown’s genre-warping club sets, which tend to cover vast musical territory but never veer from the good times vibe.

In their focus on music as a means of letting loose and having fun, Smalltown DJs are like the KISS of dance music. Actually, KISS are too theatrical. They’re more like AC/DC. Meets Raffi. At a water-slide park. With a lot (a LOT) of beer.

The Smalltown story goes like this. Emes and Grimes met in the late nineties and discovered a shared interest in funky breaks and baggy pants. Emes at the time was moonlighting as a deejay while working full-time as a geologist for an oil company. Grimes, a former snowboarding prodigy (he’s on the inside cover of the very first Transworld Snowboard mag) was toiling in a skate/show shop. Joined by a love of imposing their musical tastes on others, the two started playing records out together.

Before long they had launched Hai Karate, a weekly Thursday smash-up that’s still going strong. Now in its tenth year, Hai Karate is a free-for-all dance party that borrows a little from each of the scenes that shaped the Smalltown sound – community hall punk rock, block party hip-hop and early nineties rave.

The long-running night is now hosted at HiFi Club, the Calgary nightspot that the Smalltowners opened with a partner in 2005. The HiFi is but one part of the indie empire that Emes and Grimes have built in their homeland. They also own a record label (Bigfoot), a record store (Phonics) and a clothing store (Giant 45).

The way the deejay thing is going, it’s hard to grasp how they have time for anything else. Aside from weekly residencies at HiFi and EyeCandy Soundlounge in Las Vegas, Smalltown DJs have showcased at SXSW in Austin, toured Canada with Brooklyn’s The Rub, played Thievery Corporation’s club in Mexico several times, performed at a bunch of festivals including Lollapalooza and Shambhala, and toured Europe on a swing that included a gig at Fabric in London.

That was just 2008.

Equally at home playing intimate private jams or massive festivals, Smalltown DJs have have hosted and played alongside a huge array of talent, including Afrika Bambaataa, Dj Assault, Jeru the Damaja, Diplo, Tommie Sunshine, Spankrock, Chromeo, The Rub DJs, A-Trak, XXXchange, Low Budget, James Lavelle, Z-Trip, Fort Knox Five, and more.

On the production side, the duo has released several blends, remixes and re-edits that have been getting play all over the world. Recently they teamed up with Wax Romeo to create Smalltown Romeo, a new production supergroup focused on making fun dance music with a sense of humour. Not surprisingly, Smalltown Romeo’s production style resembles the squad’s approach to deejaying – polymorphous, party-focused and pretension-free.

Smalltown DJs’ quest to maximize fun for themselves and others is an ongoing saga. They continue to tour relentlessly. Look for them in your town soon.

New Black Noise Mix!

On June 8, 2010, in mixes, by D-Monic

Black NoiseBLACK NOISE are a production force to be reckoned with. When THE FUTUREHEADS started their new label this year their first choice of remixer was Black Noise. When SOUTHERN FRIED needed someone to take their DIPLO and LAIDBACK LUKE release to another level they contacted Black Noise. And when MINISTRY OF SOUND put together their wish list for remixers of the globally successful ‘RIVERSIDE (LETS GO!)’ it was Black Noise who were added to that list.

They’ve had two EP’s released on NORMAN COOK’s celebrated SOUTHERN FRIED label and have another two to complete before a debut album will drop on the label later in the year. They have racked up 15 remixes and have TOPPED THE HYPE MACHINE CHARTS with their remix of CROOKERS FT. WILEY.

The first EP released introduced the vocal talents of WIZARD SLEEVE to the world on the track ‘ME PLUS YOU’ which was subsequently licensed by Ministry Of Sound to be mashed up with SIDNEY SAMSON’S ‘RIVERSIDE’. This reached NUMBER 2 IN THE UK CHARTS and stayed in the charts for 3 months and is still continuing to sell, very nearly reaching GOLD DISC STATUS!

EP2 had vocal collaborations with LA rapper MURS alongside a top secret and globally recognised guest MC on the track ‘LOOKING FLY’. Also on the EP LEX ONE from WIZARD SLEEVE makes another appearance on the title track ‘Jackin My Fresh’. A video commissioned for this tune went caused a big buzz online securing features on many websites including KANYE WEST’s blog where the he handpicked it for one of his updates!

Its been a hectic 12 months for the three man team from the South Coast of England. On top of the original material and a slew of remixes Black Noise have also helped produce an album for LA hipsters BATHROOM MURDERS and are presently heavily contributing to the forthcoming WIZARD SLEEVE debut long player. A month long Australia / New Zealand tour this summer coupled with dates across Europe have helped add further converts to the guys fanbase.

With support coming in from the likes of KISSY SELLOUT, LEE MORTIMER, FOAMO, KID KINOBE, TOMMIE SUNSHINE, LAIDBACK LUKE, MIGHTY FOOLS and THE LOOSE CANNONS the next 12 months should further strengthen the mass appeal of these bass addicts across the G.L.O.B.E…

I like Black Noise. I like them better now that I know who they REALLY are! Take a look at their press photo and see if they look familiar.

Here’s an amazing mix! No sample. Just download it. You’ll like it.

While catching up on the Mad Decent blog, I checked out the new Diplo produced Snoop Dogg tune.

This beat is addictive. I must have listened to it 10 times in a row once I got it. Not big on the chorus, but the rest is pretty hot! We all know that Diplo‘s movin’ on up, and if he keeps making beats like this he’ll be a household name in no time.

SOUTH RAKKAS CREW – THE STIMULUS PACKAGE

SOUTH RAKKAS CREW – THE STIMULUS PACKAGE

It’s finally here, the big New Years present from Alex G and Dow Jones! Featuring vocals from Capleton, Killa Queenz, Deerhoof (!?) and a host of other new & unknown rippers – YES! Grab it all for free below!!!

WHO ARE THE SOUTH RAKKAS CREW?

South Rakkas Crew (SRC) was founded by producer Dennis ‘Dow Jones’ Shaw in late 2002. After managing Riprock n Alex G Entertainment, Orlando’s premier ‘Pop’ production house, Dow Jones teamed up with Alex G creating what is proving to be one of the hottest Dancehall and Electro music production teams today.

South Rakkas CrewSRC gave the world Riddims like: Clappas, Red Alert, Bionic Ras, Chinkuzi, etc. They have produced Dancehall music’s biggest artists including Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Lady Saw, Mr. Vegas, Ce’Cile, Mr. Easy, Sizzla, T.O.K., and the list goes on. They have become known as Dancehall’s most innovative producers, bringing a fresh new sound which the top European DJ’s have titled Electro-Dancehall. Dow Jones has another alias, “King of the cut,” given to him by some of Jamaica’s biggest producers, for South Rakka’s ability to ‘chop up’, and rearrange songs creating new and exciting mixes.

Although the team is based in Orlando Florida, they hail from Southern Canada. Growing up in Toronto, and Mississauga Ontario has given them an edge, explains Dow Jones. “I was born in Jamaica but grew up in Canada. Alex G and I grew up in a very multicultural environment. We have been exposed to many genres of music. At different times in our lives were were into Top 40, Reggae, Pop, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Dancehall, Bass, Freestyle, Dance, R&B, Jungle, New Wave, Rave, Rock, Salsa, Merengue, Electro., etc. This is what gives us our sound.” This ‘sound’ has earned South Rakkas Crew high accolades in the remix world as well, and from a very eclectic list of artists, including: Bob Marley, Duran Duran, DJ Shadow, Lily Allen, Beck, T.O.K, Mr. Vegas, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Bounty Killer, T-Pain, R. Kelly, Twista, Good Charlotte, Shakira, Alicia Keys, and Chris Brown.

The team worked together in Canada, but struggled with the compromises they had to make due to the industries lack of interest in domestic urban music. Alex G moved to Florida to do some production work for Base music rappers 95 South and a then unknown Pop group called NSYNC. Dow Jones quickly followed and although he had always dabbled in Dancehall, was producing Latin Rap and House before his relocation.
